Chapter Twenty

Nolan resisted the urge to glance over at Bex, who was sitting in the passenger’s seat of the car that he—well, Taia, really—drove along the superhighway. They were moving east through the Six Boroughs, headed toward the outskirts of New Avalon.

Bex had gone through the plan at an almost frenzied pace, covering the stages of the op so quickly he’d struggled to keep up. Considering they had no intel newer than the building’s ten-year-old blueprints, he wasn’t exactly convinced.

Her plan of attack held merit—she’d talked a vicious game, detailing an assault approach that would keep both of them far from the direct line of fire and offer an acceptably high chance of success—but he still worried. She was a driven woman, no doubt about it. Yet there was such a thing as too much drive. In dangerous ops like the one they faced, shit could turn ugly in a hurry. It took a level head to adapt and adjust to the countless variables. Every shred of instinct told Nolan that Bex was far from level-headed.

But the last time he’d tried to talk her out of a plan, she’d nearly bitten his head off and walked away. The best play here was to help craft a solid op plan and do his damnedest to keep things from spinning out of control. As long as he was on the glass and watching her back through his scope, he felt confident they could get through this in one piece.

Lunarus, the late-night moon, hung in the middle of the sky, shining like a pale diamond above the towering buildings of the Six Boroughs and Easterlyn beyond. Midnight was still more than an hour away—they had plenty of time to get this done before sunrise.

It had taken Nolan twenty minutes to get jocked up and ready to roll. He’d have liked to take a bit longer to go over his loadout, but, sensing Bex’s impatience, he’d gone with his standard kit.

The Balefire Mark 2.1 served as his primary weapon, with his backup shotgun—a Thunderbuster SP12, an automatic work of beauty loaded with a 12-round drum carrying explosive rounds—as his secondary. The NC7 blaster pistol and Echoblade completed his weapons, with four grenades: two high-explosive Gatecrasher incendiary fragmentation grenades, a concussion grenade, and one EMP grenade just in case things went really wrong.

Bex carried just her assault rifle of choice—the MK75 with the rapid-fire blaster engine module that turned it into a light machine gun—and a heavy Karma Sideshooter repeater pistol, complete with silencer. Her loadout consisted of six grenades: a pair each of standard frags, Gatecrashers, and flashbangs.

After exiting out the apartment’s rooftop hatch, the two of them had made good time getting to the underground Grove District parking lot where Nolan had stashed one of the four unregistered, adapted vehicles he owned and kept around New Avalon for times just like this.

With Taia monitoring—and occasionally “adjusting”—the traffic signals, the route east had been relatively clear, even for the late hour. The AI put their ETA at shortly before midnight.
